Project Overview

Located 460 km north-northeast of Broome, Western Australia, the Prelude Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) Facility operates as a turret-moored offshore floating production facility with gas processing and liquefaction units. The facility includes LNG, LPG, and condensate storage as well as facilities for exporting these products to offtake carriers. Initially launched in late 2013 with production beginning in 2018, Prelude continues its pivotal role of extracting, liquefying, and storing natural gas before it is transferred and shipped to customers.

The Challenge

Operating the world’s longest vessel presents unique technical and safety challenges that require careful planning and strategic oversight to continue operations. Intricate offshore facilities like Prelude must maintain comprehensive safety cases that demonstrate how an operator manages health and safety risks at the facility to a level As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP), which must be updated every five years. Ensuring this documentation remains current, accurate, and thorough requires strong technical knowledge, cross-discipline coordination and structured risk management.

Our Current Role

Ideight supports the project by overseeing the ongoing management of the Prelude Facility Safety Case, coordinating experts across disciplines and facilitating stakeholder workshops, ensuring every technical update and operational change is captured with precision. Our team conducts Hazard Operability (HAZOP) Revalidation workshops with relevant stakeholders, helping ensure the facility continues to operate safely while adapting to ongoing operational changes.

As Prelude continues long-term operations, Ideight remains a key partner in maintaining the facility’s safety framework. By supporting ongoing safety case management and facilitating periodic HAZOP revalidation studies, we help ensure Prelude continues to operate safely, efficiently and in alignment with evolving regulatory and operational requirements.
